China is the third largest country in the world.
     
  Fourth graders are expected to know 2,000 of the over 40,000 written Chinese characters. By the time they leave college, they will know 4,000 or 5,000 characters. Each character is learned through memorization.
     
  When a Chinese child loses a baby tooth, the child's parents plant the tooth in the ground, so the new tooth will grow in straight and healthy
     
  Ice cream was invented in China around 200 0BC, when the Chinese packed a mixture of milk and rice in the snow.
     
  Because of the time difference, China is sometimes a day ahead of the United States.
     
  The Chinese calendar is the oldest known calendar, dating back to 2600 B.C.
     
  The Great Wall is so large that astronauts have seen it from the moon!

Ma Sung, the noodle maker’s son
Six-year old Ma Sung lives in a small town in the northwest of China. Although China is fast becoming industrialized, many activities – such as food shopping, getting a haircut, watching TV and celebrating festivals - still take place on the streets. Ma Sung is usually obedient, and helps his parents after school. But after a festival, he ends up wishing that he had followed their advice about firecrackers.
