About Thailand

Thailand used to be called Siam (as it is called in the musical The King and I).

Every year, there is an Elephant Round-up Festival, which includes elephant sport matches.

The Rocket Festival utilizes a volatile mixture of bamboo and gunpowder to convince the sky to send rain for the new rice season

Here are some Thai proverbs – and their equivalent in English

Training and education can help disabled people

Blind kids may use a guide dog, kids with hearing impediments may use hearing aids, kids who find it hard to walk may need a wheelchair, crutches or even articifial limbs.

Some diabilities – like dyslexia – are invisible, but children with mental disabilities also need extra help.

Kulaap learns to walk
Six year-old Kulaap is one of triplets! But she was born very weak, and had to spend the first 3 months of her life in an incubator. When her mother left, Kulaap was put into a government children’s home. But she became weaker, and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The children’s home was very crowded, and Kulaap would cry if anyone came near her. A non-profit organization heard about her plight, and Kulaap’s father agreed to let them raise the child. Because of the extra care and attention, she is getting much better. She smiles and laughs all the time, and can even climb the steps by herself. Everyday she goes to a special hospital for physical therapy. Right now, Kulaap’s goal is to be able to walk by herself.

In the assembly and study module, your students will learn that:

  • All kids deserve the chance to lead normal lives.
  • The right kind of care and support can help disabled children
    to lead full, rewarding lives.
  • Disabled kids may need some extra help
  • Help starts with understanding and caring
  • We can’t always prevent people from being disabled, but we can make sure that disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.
